Science
The sand figures come from the vibration modes of a thin circular plate (Kirchhoff plate theory; eigenvalues as tabulated by Leissa, Vibration of Plates, 1969): in “See the sound”, a brass plate bolted at its centre with a free edge; in the opening, a thicker plate of the same kind ringing the two modes nearest each bowl’s pitch at once. Bowl synthesis, used only when a recording can’t play, follows partials measured from Sound Medicine Maui’s own bowls, the Csound modal frequency tables and Wilkerson, Serafin & Ng (ICMC 2002), and the beating described by Terwagne & Bush (2011).
